Cobourg
Cobourg is a beach town with a beautiful white-sand beach along Lake Ontario. There is a splash pad and a beautiful park at the waterfront. The water’s a bit cold though!
We’d recommend the Black Cat Cafe on King Street for a coffee and Dairy Dream for Ice Cream at the end of College Street and the top of the park!
Port Hope
Right next door is Port Hope, with a historic downtown and lots of wonderful restaurants and pubs. There is great small-town shopping and antique stores. We’d recommend Jim’s Pizza or a drink at the Thirsty Goose, favourites in our family!
Toronto
There is a train to Toronto that leaves from the Cobourg VIA station and will take you to Toronto Union Station. A GO train system with connections in Oshawa to Toronto as well.
We’d recommend St. Lawrence Market, the CN Tower with a walk on the glass floor, and Ripley’s Aquarium! Why not see a baseball game while in the city or a trip to the distillery district. There’s so much do to, visit the link below for a top 20 list.
Northumberland Forest
If nature is more your speed and you’d enjoy some time outside, then head out to the Northumberland Forest.
In the winter, they serve as ski trails, but in the summer months, there is beautiful hiking. Don’t forget some bug spray, the mosquitos can be bad.
Niagara
Niagara is a two and a half hour drive from Cobourg (one hour from Toronto). If you’d like to visit Niagara Falls, although we’d recommend you stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake if you visit there. Niagara itself is very touristy with casinos, but Niagara-on-the-Lake is stunning. Lots of vineyards to visit, and beautiful scenery. We’d recommend booking a vineyard tour so you don’t need to drive! Don’t forget to try ice wine, a Canadian (very sweet) specialty.
Butter Tarts
Interested in something a little different? Why not try the Butter Tart Tour and sample the different butter tarts of the region. A sweet treat, and a Canadian favourite, you can drive between bakeries and make your pick on the best tart.
Toronto Island
For panoramic views of the city and a beach day, try visiting Toronto Island. A quick ferry across will give you beautiful views of the city skyline. Rent bikes to go around the island or just go for a little walk. Well worth it on a beautiful day.
Prince Edward County
If you’d like to visit vineyards but Niagara is a bit too far to travel, why not visit Prince Edward County. An h0ur drive east of Cobourg, it has lots of beautiful towns and villages with stunning vineyards, and cider distilleries, in between.
If you’d like to drive around, we suggest that you rent a car upon arrival from Pearson Airport. Remember, we drive on the right hand side!
